Help in challenging times and beyond

Updated: Jun 25, 2023

This is the first of a series of posts relating to my new book - Learn, Enjoy, Flow & Grow: Using the principles of positive psychology to help find passion and meaning in life. In each of these posts I will give an overview of the various chapters, the subjects covered and the kind of questions that I am asking the reader to consider. Hopefully this will prompt you to purchase the book and then engage in some discussion around each topic. So, let me tell you a little more about the book and why it is so helpful not only in these extraordinary times that we are currently experiencing but also as we move beyond towards the future.

Del's new book - what is it all about?

Learn, Enjoy, Flow & Grow (LEFG) is essentially a 'coaching method' for the self or those with whom you work. However, it is much more than that as it not only helps with better learning and coaching in the present but it is about self-development, self-actualisation better mental health and well-being.

Each of the four sections (LEFG) is vitally important if a more meaningful life is to be achieved. The book covers a whole host of topics such as developing interests, skill acquisition, talent vs. skill, how to practice, developing passion, enjoying the journey, being creative, being more present, finding hope etc.

My recent studies in positive psychology form the basis of the book and provide the science that underpins the topics covered. My own background as a coach, learner, and lover of mountain life is used to provide examples relating to each topic and this is supplemented by contributions from some amazing people who have achieved great things in various domains.

Who is this book for?

It may sound somewhat clichéd but this book is aimed at a wide range of people;

If you are an individual who wants a formula to help improve your mental health and wellbeing then this book is for you.

If you enjoy nature and being outside in great countryside and mountains then there is so much in this book for you.

If you are the kind of person who likes to apply the findings of scientific research to help improve the quality of your life then you will enjoy this book.

If you are a coach, instructor or leader in sport then this book will help you to do a better job.

If you are a business leader or coach then the information in this book can be easily applied to your domain.

This is what Nancy Chambers (author of the Daily Gratitude Journal) says about the book;

“Derek has written a fantastic book for coaches and leaders encouraging you to understand some of the principles of positive psychology and to explore flow in your own environment.  Derek uses plenty of examples within the book from coaching outdoor sports, however the theories that he uses will be equally at home in a business or personal environment. A highly recommended book for those coaching or leading in the outdoor environment”.
