Content overview

This workshop will look at focused attention, which is one of the most important dimensions of flow. It will explore what attention is and how it can be both effortful and effortless with the latter relating to flow experiences. It is also ideal for coaches, managers, leaders, instructors and anyone who wants to improve interpersonal communication and engagement.

ONLINE WORKSHOP #3 - Mental health: Flourishing and well-being through sport and physical activity

Content overview

This workshop will focus on mental health rather than mental illness. It is a really important distinction to make; mental health is about realising your potential and flourishing while coping with the inevitable ups and downs of life, whereas mental illness is about pathology and disorder. While the workshop will not ignore mental challenges and languishing it will focus on strategies and good practice that leads to thriving, purpose and meaning and how sport and physical activity are a crucial part of achieving this.

Using the structure of the academy's coaching method; Learn, Enjoy, Flow & Grow and focusing on 'GROW' topics addressed will include; purpose, being vs. doing, hope, resilience and meaning. Wrapped up in these aforementioned areas will be emotions (positive and negative), strengths, mindfulness, savouring, flow etc.

NB: Please note that 'mental health' is a huge subject and the topics mentioned above would all warrant workshops of their own. This workshop will provide an overview of these areas and the ensuing discussion will be determined by the participants and which of these areas is of most interest and relevance to them.

Who should attend this workshop?

This workshop is suitable for anyone who is interested in improving their mental health and well-being and using sport and physical activity to aid this process. It is aimed at those involved with helping others be it coaches and instructors from any sport, PE teachers and anyone involved in the leisure industry e.g., centre managers, front office staff etc.

Format

The workshop will be a mixture of presentation and discussion with participants encouraged to ask questions and relate the topic to their own sporting activities and the mental challenges they may face.

Platform

The live online workshop will be run on ZOOM. Participants will be sent a joining link prior to the workshop.

Duration

The live online workshop itself will be 3 hours duration made up of 3 x 1 hour sessions with 2 x 15min breaks built into the session.
